ABOUT THE ARTIST
As an artist, I am captivated by the interaction of light and shadow in our world. Painting, for me, is a form of magic—a way of creating the illusion of life on a flat surface. When I paint something, I’m not aiming for photorealism; I’m offering my subjective interpretation. After all, we each experience the world through our own personal lens. When someone connects with one of my pieces or has an emotional response, I am moved and humbled by that shared connection. It’s a feeling that is hard to put into words.
I didn’t always know I wanted to be an artist. I was a practicing lawyer for many years, but after having children and taking time off, I found myself drawn to painting. In 2018, I picked up a paintbrush and discovered an artistic side of myself that was both surprising and exhilarating. I eventually decided not to return to law. Instead, I have continued to learn about art and develop my artistic abilities.
An academic at heart, I love diving into the theory behind art— understanding how to create the illusion of form on a 2D surface, how light influences colour and colours influence each other, and how to lead the viewer through a painting with composition, just to name a few. This constant learning is a source of endless fascination for me. Although I am self-taught, I have been far from alone in my journey. I’ve taken numerous workshops and courses, I worked with a mentor from British Columbia in 2021 and 2022, and I am fortunate to have started working under the mentorship of a well-respected American artist this spring. This guidance has shaped much of my growth as an artist. I will always aim to expand my knowledge and skills.
My current work revolves around landscapes, while sketching regularly helps me refine my drawing techniques. I view my artistic journey as one of constant evolution, and I can’t imagine a time when I won’t be striving to deepen my understanding of art and the world around me.
Thanks for taking the time to learn more about me!
